So you decided to get ink done for the very first time. There is nothing better then coming home and taking a look at your fresh richly colored tattoo. But if you don't take care of it right there is a big chance the color is going to fade. Follow these essential tattoo after-care tips and you will ensure your ink stays as dark and as richly colored as when you walked out the tattoo parlour. 1. Hands Off the BandageKeep the bandage on for at least two hours. Your tattoo is an open wound and is prone to bacteria and other infections. If you keep it open it turns into a nesting ground for all the nasty little critters that will seriously damage your skin. Ensure your tattoo artist uses a breathable bandage too. If he has saran wrapped it then take it off immediately because your tat needs air to recover. 2. Wash It, Treat ItOnce your bandage comes off, the next two weeks are vital in allowing your tattoo to heal properly. Wash with warm water and use a mild anti-bacterial wash. Keep you tattoo clean and slime free because you don't want anything drying onto it. Use your hands to gently rub it under water and pat dry with a towel. After that apply Vitamin E cream or vaseline to heal your skin gently. You can also use antibacterial ointments but don't put anything too harsh on. 3. Water ResistantIt's okay to get your tattoo wet but don't get it totally soaked. So it is fine to take a shower with your tattoo providing you don't point the shower directly on the tattoo. Avoid soaking it, so stay away from hot tubs and bathes or anything that drowns your tattoo, this will cause it to fade. Definitely avoid pools, lakes or oceans for two weeks. 4. ScabsIt is common for there to be some scabbing and peeling. If there is peeling then you can put some ointment on it to moisturise the skin. If there is scabbing then avoid putting any product on it. Instead use a warm wet cloth to dab the area. This will soften the scabs and it will fall off on its own. If there is a lot of scabbing and peeling then it may be an indication of a poorly done tattoo. It's going to get itchy and the best thing for you to do is to leave it alone. Don't scratch or rub it. If it gets really bad try slapping it instead. 5. Sun DamageExposure to the sun is another factor that can cause fading. Try and keep out of direct sunlight for 2 weeks. Wear loose clothing to cover it. Avoid anykind of suncreen for the first couple of weeks.
