A Serbian union official protesting overdue wages for factory workers has cut off his finger and eaten it to show how desperate he and his workers are.

Zoran Bulatovic explained, "We, the workers have nothing to eat, we had to seek some sort of alternative food and I gave them an example."

He also added, "It hurt like hell."

Bulatovic was the union head of the Raska Holding textile factory located in southwest Serbia in the town of Novi Pazar.

He claimed that most of the workers there had not received their wages for years and have been living on benefits provided by their employer. The textile factory is under state-owned corporation Raska Holding which was said to employ 4000 workers but suffered economic hard-times during the 90's, at the collapse of Yugoslavia.

He decided to perform the act after another union member, a single mother of three, vowed to cut her finger off if wages were not paid. He explained it was the only way to stop her from doing it first.

The workers who also went on a 19 day hunger strike last year have agreed to hold further self-mutilating acts as negotiations with government officials continue.
